WordPress hardening your installation closing the login loophole

by Johnny Da Silva | Apr 17, 2013 | Blogging, WordPress | 0 comments

Wordpress Security

The popularity of WordPress has increased tenfold in the last year. The open source software is one of the top software packages being used to create new sites. This means that not only is WordPress popular, but attempts on WordPress are also popular. The more popular a software gets the larger a target it becomes. While WordPress has some reasonable coding, there are, as there will be with any software, some issues that exist which make it a little easier to attack. One of those issues is that WordPress  by default, will allow you to try as many times as you see fit to log into WordPress  That means that you’ll want to ensure that someone with a good piece of hacker software or a brute force software can’t attempt to guess your code fifty times in order to breach your admin.

There are two pieces of software that were designed for WordPress which can help you to close this hole. The first is a free plugin for WordPress which is known as Login Lockdown. You can set the configuration for Login Lockdown to prevent people from attempting to get into WordPress  as many times as they would like. Limiting the number of times that someone can attempt to log in to WordPress is one way to harden your installation and protect your website.

The second method of accomplishing this is WordFence. Functioning not only as a login limitation device you can also adjust the settings on WordFence plugin to lock out certain IP addresses as well as to create a more secure atmosphere for your clients or your own site. Further, you can use WordFence to throttle users who are seeking to insert code into your site and stop a few other nefarious schemes while you’re at it.

With the two plugins listed above, you can harden your WordPress installation and create a more secure atmosphere  in which to add your content and your products and services. Both plugins are free of charge and both are supported and regularly updated by a WordPress community which stands behind the product that they supply.
